It started with a project
Two colleagues, one international client and a thousand video calls. Somewhere between deadlines and time zones, Ishan and Claire started looking forward to their meetings a little too much.

Two colleagues, one international client and a thousand video calls. Somewhere between deadlines and time zones, Ishan and Claire started looking forward to their meetings a little too much.
New Delhi
Philippines
He was in New Delhi, India. She was in the Philippines, two and a half hours ahead. Between them: mountains, the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea.

Good-morning texts that arrived at lunchtime, goodnight calls that ran past midnight, frozen screens and endless "can you hear me now?". Every call made the distance feel a little smaller.

Then the calls were not enough. Ishan packed a bag, boarded a plane and flew across the sea to see her smile in person for the very first time.

Then Claire flew to India. Street food at little stalls, spiced tea in clay cups, long walks and a family that welcomed her like their own. Delhi felt like home with her in it.

Henna artists, tea and music through the afternoon, turning into a night of dance performances, dhol and celebration under the lights.
The groom rides out on a decorated horse with his family dancing all the way, the couple exchange garlands, and the evening ends with the sacred pheras around the fire.

Rituals Explained
No need to know the steps. Just follow the music, the smiles and the aunties.
The women of the family worship the potter's wheel, a symbol of creation, and bring home clay pots used in the wedding rituals.
Turmeric paste is applied to bless the couple, protect them from evil and give them a bridal glow.
Intricate henna designs are drawn on the bride's hands and feet. Guests can get henna too.
A night of music and dance where both families perform, tease and celebrate together.
The groom rides a decorated mare while his sisters feed it, then leads a dancing procession to the bride.
Bride and groom exchange flower garlands, accepting each other. Friends often lift them up to make it harder.
The couple walk seven times around the sacred fire, making seven vows to each other. This is the heart of the wedding.
An emotional farewell as the bride leaves her family home to begin her new life, with blessings from everyone.
What to Wear
Traditional and bright: reds, oranges and pinks
Yellow and white, in clothes you do not mind getting stained
Shades of green, with some sparkle for the dance floor
Rich jewel tones like emerald, royal blue, plum and gold. Please leave pink and red for the bride, and avoid all-white or all-black.
Visiting from abroad? Indian outfits can be bought or rented easily in Delhi, and we are happy to help. November evenings are cool (about 12 to 15 °C), so bring a shawl or light jacket.
